Cole says that Manchester United’s move to the top is a “great achievement” but they will not win the Premier League this season

No member of the 1998-99 treble-winning team believes Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current tally will oust Liverpool in May.

Andy Cole says that top of the Premier League is a “fantastic achievement” for Manchester United, but he doesn’t think they will win the title this season.

United reached the top with a 1-0 win over Burnley at Turf Moore on Tuesday, thanks to a powerful shot from Paul Pogba who netted the net with the help of a deflector.

That result saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side lead a three-point lead over second-placed Liverpool ahead of a trip to Anfield on Sunday, with optimism mounting at Old Trafford after a stunning shift in fortunes over the holidays.

The Red Devils have recovered from a slow start to the season by winning nine of their last 11 games, and are still facing defeat on their travels.

United have not been in that spot on the schedule at this point in any season since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, but Cole has played down the talk of the return of the League crown to Manchester in May.

The treble-winning striker feels his old club is heading in the right direction under Solshire, but he doesn’t believe his former team-mate has enough strength in depth at his disposal to reclaim the trophy from Liverpool this season.

“Can Manchester United win the league this season? Maybe not,” said the Red Devils legend TalkSPORT.

“I think to top Manchester United on January 12th, as Ole said, is an amazing feat considering what it was like two months ago …

“Everyone was saying Ole shouldn’t be a Manchester United coach and I think he’s talking a lot about how to change him … and how they gained the confidence to be where they are now.

“If you look at the league and teams like Manchester City, who didn’t play well about 2-3 weeks ago … they have two games in hand and could be a point behind Manchester United [if they win both].

“The players are just shining. I think the players appreciate the quality of the players and the quality of Liverpool.

“To bridge the gap in one season, this is not a feat, it will require some consistency and those teams have not played well yet.

“But winning the title this season will take some effort.

“I don’t think we have enough to go forward and win the title this season, but I feel we can look forward to next season when I think it can be a lot better.”
