Manchester United legend Paul Scholes says manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is not using Mason Greenwood properly at the club.
Greenwood appeared on the scene in the 2019-20 season, scoring 19 goals in his first full season and rising to become the second oldest teenager in the world.
His achievement was even more impressive considering he was playing out of his right-winger position, but Solskjaer has used him sparingly this season. The 19-year-old has started only 12 of the 28 matches United have played so far and has completed 90 minutes in just two minutes.
Scholes said, “I think Ole really needs to start playing Mason more regularly now” ESPN.
He will score as many goals as possible and is the type of striker who can reach 25-30 per season when he gets more experience.
“But he won’t score if he doesn’t play, and he’s at a point where he needs to be there.
He’s similar to Phil Foden earlier this season at Man City – Pep Guardiola was holding him back, but he clearly had the talent to play a major role and he’s showing it now. Mason is on the same level.
Scholes then goes on to say that he thinks United’s three strongest players are Rashford, Martial and Greenwood and that Edinson Cavani, as he’s been good since arriving on a free transfer in October, should be used as an influential alternative.
Cavani surprised me. Scholes said: “ I thought he ran out of power at PSG, but I still don’t think he’s a player that should start.
He’s the guy that you knocked off the bench in the last 20 minutes when you needed a goal, and I think that was evident in the matches he started, when he wasn’t looking very strong.
But I like the best front three for Olly – Rashford, Martial, and Greenwood – because I think they all deliver so much. People think I don’t like Martial, but I actually really value him. I just think now, his confidence has waned a bit and he needs to rebuild it again.
Solskjaer’s reasons for blocking Greenwood are unclear but may be related to rumors of disciplinary issues at the time the teen was sent home from the England squad with Foden after breaking quarantine restrictions in Iceland.
